I received an advanced copy of this book from Bookbrowse and I am glad that I did. The book will be available for everyone to read on April 23, 2013.
First, I really like the picture on the cover of the book. It shows a young girl dressed in clothing from the past holding bloodstained envelopes behind her. That in itself raises your curiosity.
I love mysteries and historical fiction so this book filled both of those passions. The story takes place in the 1600's and the central character, Lucy, is one of the servants to a wealthy family of this time. Since I am a big fan of "Downton Abbey", I loved this book because it reminded me of my favorite show.
Mrs Calkins has enough suspicious characters in the story making the mystery not easy to solve. In fact, I was surprised by the outcome,
I enjoyed the characters especially Lucy as I noted. I look forward reading more stories with Lucy as the main character as Mrs. Calkins states this is the first in a series. I will anxiously await the second in the series.
I also liked how the author used her knowledge and research of history to portray what occurs in the story though sometimes she used circumstances that didn't exist in history, however, she explains this in her follow up.
I gave this story four stars even though it started out slowly but after Mrs Calkins set up the story, I couldn't put it down, I look forward to reading more books by Susanna Calkins.
